Sunday, October 4, 2026 is National Church Music Sunday. This is a particularly special year for the National Forum of Greek Orthodox Church Musicians as it celebrates its 50th Anniversary.

The National Forum of Greek Orthodox Church Musicians (https://churchmusic.goarch.org/) is the Archdiocesan ministry responsible for liturgical music activities and the development, support, and recognition of church musicians. These include choirs, chanters, youth church music programs, and clergy.

On Sunday, October 4th we will have a special tray in the narthex for your support to keep these much needed services going.

The National Forum also addresses specific church music needs of clergy, choir directors, organists, choir members, composers, church schools and congregations. As the musical arm of the Archdiocese, the National Forum also collaborates with other Archdiocesan departments to address church music needs.

The National Forum has developed a number of new initiatives this year.

The Parish Music Leadership Initiative (commonly known as the MELI project) is an online program designed to educate and train the full gamut of our church musicians, youth and clergy. This program was recently debuted at the 2026 Clergy Laity Congress and received rave reviews, stressing the necessary step this is for our Archdiocese.

Additionally, the youth portion of MELI will become part of the Archdiocese’s new Department of Religious Education (DRE) Kids Sunday Series hymn track.

Another major youth initiative established by the National Forum is the Saint Romanos Church Music Festival. Patterned after the successful Saint John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival, this festival will focus on the sacred hymnology of our church, creating the next generation of choir directors, choir members and chanters.

TREK4MISSIONS 2026
The Missions Ministry is joining OCMC's Trek4Missions again this year, a fitness challenge that turns miles walked, run, or biked into support for Orthodox missionaries around the world. Every step helps fund the training and sending of missionaries who bring the Gospel to those who haven't yet heard it.

Join our team, set your own activity goal, and help us reach ours — whether you walk a mile a day or ride the whole distance, every contribution counts.

Fr. Milutin will share his work honoring the legacy of Archbishop Anastasios Yannoulatos of Albania — one of the great missionary figures of modern Orthodoxy. Archbishop Anastasios spent decades in selfless service across Africa and Albania, and his theological vision continues to shape Orthodox missiology worldwide.

Fr. Milutin is co-organizing an international series of academic conferences dedicated to preserving and transmitting Archbishop Anastasios' legacy. As part of this effort, the organizing committee seeks to publish the first international academic volume dedicated to Archbishop Anastasios' theological and pastoral legacy — to be published through Salt, the only Orthodox missionary journal based in Athens. The Sts. Peter and Paul Missions Ministry is prayerfully considering how our parish can participate in this meaningful endeavor.

Come hear our beloved Fr. Milutin speak about this work, ask questions, and learn how our St. Nicholas parish may play a part in keeping Archbishop Anastasios' missionary spirit alive for future generations.

Light refreshments will be served. All are welcome.

ST. NICHOLAS BASKETBALL - HIGH SCHOOL BOYS THREE-PEAT AS CHAMPS! ELEMENTARY BOYS SHOW DETERMINATION IN A THRILLING SEMI-FINAL
The 2026 Spring Season wrapped up with a great day of basketball last Saturday. The day saw the High School Boys come out on top as 3-time repeat champs with a win over Annunciation San Francisco. The elementary boys continued to thrill with semi-final game effort that was within reach in the final minutes, but fell short. The Elementary Girls and MS Girls and Boys teams also lost in their semi-final games, but continued to display great effort and heart. Our community is extremely proud of all the players, coaches, and fans for their effort, support, and sportsmanship.

The End of Season BBQ was held this past Wednesday with great attendance. Congrats to 3rd grader Diana Brown for winning our skills competition and to Evangelos Papadimitriou for winning our 3-pt contest.

Girls Elementary (2-4, 3rd place)

The elementary girls had a great season with 5 new players joining some returning players. Look out for our 4 third graders who will be a force as they mature. Team: Chloe Davis, Joanna Kwong Pagonis, Katerina Golfinopoulos, Mia Spilios, Elizabeth Kwong Pagonis, Paris Matheou, Vakiliki Papapanagiotou, Chryssa Delopoulos, Diana Brown...Coaches Nektarios Matheou/John Cocoles

Girls Middle School (1-5, 3rd place)

The middle school girls is a young but experienced team that made huge strides in the eyes of the coaches even when it didn't translate into game scores against older teams. They will be returning almost all of their players next year and look to assert themselves in the '27 season. Team: Elena Christodoulou, Phoebe Davis, Kyriaki Chalioris, Georgia Panos, Panagiota Pries, Maria Matheou, Eleni Matheou, Dina Matheou...Coaches Nektarios Matheou/John Cocoles

Boys Elementary (3-2, 3rd place)

The elementary boys were a committed team of only 7. Led by our two 5th graders, but bolstered by the rest they showed up to play every game and gave the other teams fits. Players Vassilis Papadimitriou, Yianni Pagonis, Vasili Golfinopoulos, Strati Taptelis, Aleco Panos, Elias Taptelis, Patelis Taptelis...Coaches John Cocoles/Giorgio Tavernakis

Boys Middle School (2-5, 4th place)

It wasn't the season the MS Boys wanted, but the core of next year's team was made evident. The high-paced team always kept the scorekeepers busy and with some more cohesion and maturity more victories are destined next year. Team Lambros Panayotopoulos, Andreas Papapanagioutou, Chris Iskander, Nick Polychronopoulos, Xeno Kontos, Vahe Khachaturyan, Logan Gibbons, Dimitris Perakis, Gio Pries, Luke Hatzistratis...Coach Yianni Papapanagiotou

Boys High School (7-0, Season and Playoff Champs)

The High School Boys capped off an undefeated season with two wins last Saturday against Holy Cross (Semi) and Annunciation (Final). The team is led by the 3-time Champion graduating senior class and a full roster that will take over the leadership role next year. Congrats to our graduates and our HS Champs. Team: Dionysios Maroudas (graduate), Giorgio Tavernakis (graduate), Christo Perakis, Cameron Gibbons, Bobby Vlahopouliotis, Dylan Gibbons, George Pagonis, Theo Matheou, Evangelos Papadimitriou, Petros Perakis...Coaches George Maroudas/John Tavernakis

Special thanks to our parents and volunteers for making this another successful season. Huge shoutout to Saiyanna and Francisco for all the work behind-the-scenes to help with scheduling and ensuring clean and safe facilities.

This summer, we will be holding open gyms for youth to enjoy more basketball. Keep an eye on your inbox.

LIVE SCAN (FINGER PRINTING) FOR ALL STAFF/VOLUNTEERS THAT WORK WITH YOUTH - SUNDAY, APRIL 5TH

With the new California State law on mandated reporting for all youth staff workers/volunteers, Saint Nicholas is required to comply with background checks, training (annually) and fingerprinting. We are happy that many of our youth staff workers/volunteers have already complied with the mandate.

However, for those who have not yet completed the process, Saint Nicholas is graciously offering another fingerprinting service on Sunday, April 5th from 11:30am - 12:30pm in the church office conference room - enter by the side door. Important: only those that have fulfilled the Archdiocese online account set up, Code of Conduct, background check, and training module will be allowed to get fingerprinted.

We encourage all youth staff workers/volunteers, who have not already done so, to comply with these legal requirements.

If you need any assistance, please contact Angie Markolefas at 408-891-4314 or email at youthsafety@saintnicholas.org.
